What part does the Bass guitar play in a Metal ensemble?
I'm into composing music, and I always come up with good catchy rhythms. But they always feel empty. I try adding things like a bass guitar, but it never seems to fit in well with the music (though, once i got really lucky with trial and error). My music is generally Metal...ish.
Can I have some tips? How does the bass fit in?
The bass is supposed to create the rhythm along with the drums for everything else to play off of. You can do the simple method of having it play the root of what the guitar is playing, which is pretty much always acceptable, but it may make some songs sound boring. You can also try something more complicated by playing notes in the same scale/chord that the guitar is playing at a rhythm that matches the drumming. When you do something like that you should try to limit how fast or difficult it is to play unless it really sounds like it will fit because complex basslines sometimes get cluttered and it ends up making the piece sound worse.

So really, there is no "correct" way to do it because it varies upon the situation you are in and what kind of sound you want, but generally if you stay in the same key as the guitar you should be able to mess around with it to get it to sound good. Just remember that simple is sometimes better.
