what sets Gibson USA apart from all other guitar makers in terms of quality?
what materials do they use? why are they so expensive? are you just paying for the name?
lets say i took a different les paul with the same materials, and fitted it with gibson pickups ( or duncan..). would it have similar sound?
If your talking electronics, then the pickup is mainly responsible for the sound.
But the neck is really the hard thing to make. A good American Gibson you can really lower the action and it won't buzz and the intonation will be exceptional. Fret material is important, otherwise you have to replace the frets all the time, and that' expensive.
It's also important to have decent tuning pegs to keep your guitar in tune, and hardware.
As long as you have a good solid wood, or even a two piece or three piece wood if it is laminated correctly, the guitar should sound fine. One might be able to make an arguement for all solid wood neck, just in terms of feeling the sound better. One also might make an arguement that the neck itself in terms of durability should be a mahogany/ebony combination, or be quarter sawn, etc..
But by and large, the types of woods don't make a great deal of difference in the sound - although people much smarter than me will likely disagree.
Rondo makes some excellent LP type guitars, and some entry level guitars as well. If you could get a cheap one with an excellent neck somehow, you probably save a lot of money.
Another strategy from the strat side is to get a Warmoth neck and put it on a MIM or a rondo SX. But the necks are like $300, so with a decent set of pickups, shipping and tax, you might be just a few hundred from the bottom of the line American Strats (or certainly Carvins).
