How loud will this guitar amp be at a gig?
my band is going to start doing some gigs. i own a mesa tube amp (1x12 speaker 50 watt) is that loud enough for a small to medium gig. i have the money to buy an extension cab (2x12 speakers and 180 watts) that i can add to my amp. if i bought that and used it along with my amp, what size gig could i play?
Depends on what amp you have. A tube amp between 35 watts and 50 watts is ideal for small venues. 85 watts to 100 for medium to large venues.
Adding an extension speaker won't make your amp louder at all. It will, however push more air, since there are 2 more speakers, so your sound will be a lot cleaner and clearer, especially if you get different types of speakers... like my setup: Mesa Mark IV ---> Mesa 2x12 with Celestion v30's & Diezel 4x12 that has G12K100's I think. The v30's provide a decent low end and spread the sound out, so I place them on the bottom. The 4x12 goes on top, which has a more direct sound path, meaning, it's louder when standing directly in front of it, but when you move from side to side, the volume decreases drastically. These cabs are great for recording too, because the mic can be placed directly in front to get the sound, or off center... but that's a whole other story.
Anyways, if you're loud enough and can hear yourself at practice, then you should be fine. An extra cab does sound better, especially when you have it on the opposite side of the drummer, so you'll have your one speaker on your side, and the other speaker cab on the other side of the stage, for better more surround sound.
