What is a 'knife edge' bridge for a guitar?

I want to take out my guitar bridge on my guitar just to study it as i am curious hwo to replace it in the future since its getting old and rusty nowadays... but i hear term like 'knife edge' and see those tension coils in the back of the trem and i just assume the worst will happen when i try to take it out... like a sharp object will pop out of the trem lol and ruin my guitar when i try unscrewing the trem and taking it out. I was curious what knife edge meant. Is a sharp part of the bridge 'cutting into' the wood to hold it there or soemthing? Can i ruin the guitar trying to take it out? and how should i do it... Unscrew the bridge in front (2 screws), then try to get those tension coils out the back? this is a pic of my Wilkinson tremelo http://arihoj.freehostia.com/images/rusty.png

It might be a good idea to read everything before you start.
All you need is some wire cutters and a little patience.
Take a mouse pad and put it under the back of the tremelo,because when you cut the strings the tension from the springs will make the tremelo go backwards an gouge the finish. the pad will get pinched back there.Next pop out the springs from the back while holding the tremelo firmly against the front.Pull the side of the springs that are attached to the trem 1st, then lift off the loop side.The trem will be loose now. put the guitar down on a towel or something soft with the trem facing up.Now lean the trem towards the neck slightly and move it back and up. It should pull straight up easily.Dont touch the 2 screws it was sitting against on the top, or the 2 screws on the underside(where the springs go)If the 2 screws on top are loose then put some tape on them to keep them from moving until your ready to re install the trem.
Replace the rusted parts and be sure to mark exactly where they were before, and put them back the same way you took them off.Follow my directions in reverse for re install of the trem and you will be ready to rock.
