Lipstick Single Coil
In terms of single coil pickups, what is the difference between like lipstick, strat, lace sensor, etc?
In case it isn't clear, I mean for guitars and by "difference" I mean sound and tone
In a very general sense, different pickups have different levels of output and different EQ characteristics.
Lipstick pickups tend to have a little less treble and a little less output, while "normal" strat pickups are your standard single coil pups. Lace sensors are a certain type of single coils, and are usually a little hotter and have an overall better tone, depending on the model.
I would suggest going to harmonycentral.com and going to the pickup review section. Customer reviews can give you a better perspective on what each pickup sounds like.
Most single coil pups have 60 hz hum, but many aftermarket pups have done something to eliminate this, cuz it sucks to have your guitar hum. This could be stacked single coil pups, mini humbuckers, etc.
I really can't help much more than this - I don't like the sound of single coil pickups as much, I prefer humbuckers for their beef, lack of hum, and hotter overall tone. Yngwie Malmsteen plays some great metal with a single coil pickup, but I'm not Yngwie Malmsteen - I want a round tone with plenty of chunk. =)
