Maple Clear Gloss
giving wood a high gloss shine?
ok, so i have a piece of wood i would like to give a super high gloss shine to. It dosent need to be perfect, just look good(and shiny). It will be used for the border of a workbench, so like i said it dosent need to be perfect as its going to get roughed up in time anyhow...
Its originally a very light maple color, though i have already oil stained it a darker red color. the color is perfect as is, and id like to leave it with its curent color and just add a super high gloss. What would you recommend??
Ive read that after the stain you should use a sanding sealer or shellac, followed by a filler (mixing the oil stain with filler to keep the color). And then to use a finish followed by buffing it to a shine... The only thing im confused with here is that it didnt say what exactly a "finish" is!
Ive also read that you can use just a brushed polyurethane clear finish...
Any thought? suggestions? recommendations??
thank you all much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and merry christmas!!
If your stain was a oil based stain, you should be good with an oil based polyurethane clear finish. I have had very good results using a wipe-on poly, by applying several thin coats until you achieve the "build" you desire. I recommend General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Urethane Topcoat, again applying several (4-5) coats.
