Is it possible to change the bridge of my guitar to a Kahler bridge tremolo system?

I own a Squier SE Special Stratocaster and I was wondering if it was possible to install a Kahler tremolo on it. If it is possible, what kind (series) would be good for my guitar?
Also, is it possible to install a locking nut system?

Hello there,

Yes it is possible to make this modification. However, there are some things you should consider. This swap will not be a simple bolt on procedure. You will need to make some modifications to your guitar.

First is the price. The Kahler bridge and nut will cost you about what your guitar is worth.

Second is the modifications needed. Your Squier has a Fender style tremolo bridge. It uses 6 screws to attach the bridge to the body. The Kahler uses a 2 point system. You will have to drill two mounting holes into the body for the studs on which the Kahler rests. Because the Kahler bends up and down, you will have to change the cavity routed for the bridge to accomodate the Kahler. The spring cavity on the back will not need to be modified. It does take some experience with electric routers to make a clean job on these modifications. If you cannot do the modifications, you are going to have to pay a guitar tech to install the Kahler bridge.

Third neck modifications. The Squier does not have a double locking system and therefore has a simple nut on the neck. The Kahler will need a locking nut on the neck. The nut slot will have to be routed to accept the locking nut. Depending on whether you get a top mount or bottom mount nut, holes will have to be drilled to mount the new nut.

There are top mount Kahler bridges, I do not think those would be good for this project. You will want a Kahler that resembles a Floyd Rose, something along the lines of a Kahler Spyder.

So, yes, it is possible to make the modifications to install a Kahler, but the cost will probably be prohibitive.
