Can I use Yamaha 6 ohm speakers with LG Home Theater rated for 4 ohms?
Will I be able to use a Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package rated at 6 ohms, with my LG LHB535 Blueray receiver rated for 4ohms? Will either the receiver or speakers get damaged at higher volume?
It is no problem to use 6 ohm speakers with an amplifier rated for 4 ohms. Generally the impedance rating is "minimum". Some amplifiers don't like to be ran open (infinite impedance) but these days most solid state amplifiers will not be damaged by it.
One thing though the amplifier will not deliver the same power to a higher impedance speaker. You can determine power if you know voltage and current so to explain this we will use an example. Let's say you have an amplifier that can produce 10 volts rms across a 4 ohm load. 10 volts/4 ohms is 2.5 amps. We then multiply the 2.5 amps by the 10 volts and get 25 watts. If we have the same 10 volts with a 6 ohm speaker we have 10 volts/6 ohms equals 1.66 amps. This 1.66 amps times 10 volts is only 16.6 watts. It's actually a little more complex than this because the lower the impedance load the less voltage your amplifier can provide. When you go to the 6 ohm speaker it's likely the voltage will be a little higher than 10 volts but not high enough to make up the difference and maintain the same power.
Don't put 4 ohm speakers on an amplifier rated for a minimum of 6 ohms but it is ok to put 6 ohm speakers on an amp rated for a minimum 4 ohm.
