How Do I Get This Sound?

I have a Fender Squire and a Peavey Backstage amp about 12-watts, it has the overdrive, volume, high and low knobs, how would i set my guitar and the amp to get the typical metallica sound? or do i need petals?

I agree you would need pedals (I like Boss Pedals, but also Behringer). THe best pedals to get are analog pedals, but most are digital now-a-days. Digital would be a good start, and you can get the metallica sound with digital pedals. I just don't know which pedal for metallica sound. Try searching amazon of musiciansfriend for metal pedals, Boss has a good reputation for making pedals, and if you have a large budget, then try an analog pedal to go with it.
It would up the fun factor for you most likely. Good thing i saw your question, b/c i did alot of research on pedals before, mostly good distortion/overdrive, and you can get decent metal sound with those as well. You can even interconnect these pedals to mix effects and turn certain ones off while playing (ie: you have 6 pedals, and interconnect them, then switch 2 of them off, thus mixing 4 effects)
Enough talk, go for it, and also i can recommend a good amp,with alot of wattage, then the pedals sound more like they should, they'll sound closer to their discriptions. You might already have a good amp, i don't know. You only listed your 12-watt one, my first amp had at least 40 watts, i believe.
