does anyone know how a "clamp on the wire" dc amp probe is made? ?
I would to know how a clamp on style amp probe is made and how it measures amperage passing though a wire with out any physical connection to the probe. I have looked at some that will connect to a digital multi meter that normally will only read up to 10 amps with out the clamp. I have a cheap multi meter that I would like to build a clamp for, as an experiment. also to use it in some testing applications. I have seen how a dc shunt works connected in-line with the part to be tested but can't figure out the clamp on probe! Please help.

Electronic meters use hall effect current sensing.
AC/DC clamp-on meters are also constructed with the iron-vane or moving-iron type of meter movement.
