I connected my ipod to my amp, now it smells like burning.?

Today for my birthday I got an awesome amp (MaxWatt 6200R) and just 3 hours into receiving the amp I decided to play around with ipod capabilities; as I found a lead that perfectly fits into the ipod and amp earlier. With my line 6 pod also hooked up to the amp, I tried to make the songs from my ipod awesome with effects and stuff. At this point I smell a smokey, burning kind of smell coming from the amp, and quickly turn down the volume and turn off the amp (at the powerpoint aswell).

The burning plastic smell has lingered for several hours, and I'm scared to turn it back on. Has anyone had a similar problem or acquired an expertise in amps? Any help would be great.

If this is a Hiwatt guitar amp we're talking about, then someone should come around and give you a good slap around the ears before taking the amp from you and give it to someone else...

Please... The fact that a lead/plug is the same does not mean that you can plug just anything to an in or out connection. A signal from a device like an iPod is far stronger than the output from a guitar pickup.

If you want to hook your iPod to a mixer or an amplifier, you will need an input with a line level. Always, always, always, always ... ALWAYS ... read the user manual (RTFM Read The F****** Manual)!

That said, chances are slim that you have blown something. If this is a new tube amp, then the smell is typical to some types of new tube sockets. Also, new valves/tubes tend to smell quite a bit.

If this is not a tube amp, then it is safe to say that a smell like this would indicate that something is wrong.

Anyhow, just hook a guitar directly to the input with a guitar lead and turn the volume on the amp down. Turn the amp back on and turn up a little volume (both volume and gain). If it plays OK, then try a little more volume. If it's dead, then you probably have a major repair ahead. If the sound level is normal, then you're probably safe for now.

But seriously dude... please don't try stunts like this with expensive electric and electronic equipment
