Metallic gold offers a reflective surface which absorbs some of the light in the blue-green range, thus gives a yellow shine.
A sol is a precipitated colloid. Particle size is too small to be registered by the naked eye, and the reflective quality of solid gold becomes a scattering quality. There still is some absorption in the same color range, but particle size may cause certain wave lengths of light to be eliminated.
