Source Guitar Pickup
how do you wire strat pick-ups on non-guitar string instruments?
I do circuit bending and experimental music. My new kick is putting guitar pickups on things to pick-up the vibrations. I have standard strat pick-ups, with two wires: one black and one red. Are there any websites or tips out there to help me wire them? I have found some websites about wiring pick-ups in an electric guitar, but it I've been having trouble adapting them for random home made stringed instruments that do not necessarily work like a guitar. Mainly I want to know how they are powered (do I need to install a power source) or if they work on the same principle as a contact mic (just plug it into an amp and it will pick up the vibrations and the amp will make the sound audible.)
Yes, I have searched for the answer on google, so don't bother telling me to "google it" because I did that first.
Thanks.
I am mounting the guitar pick-ups under metal strings.
No electric guitar I've ever seen ran on anything other than the microcurrent generated by the interaction of the vibrating electric strings with the pickups magnets. You shouldn't need any external power source; the microcurrent is amplified by the guitar amp directly.
You need to make sure you're using electric guitar strings on whatever instrument you're building. They are specially designed to interact with the magnets (i.e. you want a string that is ferro-magnetic, not one made of something exotic).
