Special Strat Pickups
is the spring/rubber piece for stratocaster pickups necessary?
I just bought some Texas Special pickups for this strat i'm making, and because the screws that came with the pickups are way too big to go through the pickups i'm using these smaller screws from an old guitar. The kit also came with these rubber pieces that the scrwe goes through. in other cases i've seen springs used.
if i remember correctly, the rubber piece goes between the pickup case and the actual pickup under the guitar. is it necessary? i assume it's supposed to make adjusting the pickup height more efficient, but screwing in the pickup is extremely hard when trying to include this extra piece.
Alex, the rubber pieces (actually, surgical tubing) are necessary to provide tension against the pickup base, and will compress as you install the screws. Without the tension, there is nothing to hold the pickup in place or allow for height adjustment relative to the strings.
