Add or remove guitar pickups winding? Peavey Gen Exp?

I wanted to know can I add more windings to the current pickups or remove some of the windings to get a different sound? I just bought a peavey gen exp triple single and I really don't like the sound of the pickups. Thought it would sound like my 94' strat but it doesn't. My nieces squire sounds more like my strat then the peavey. My 84' Aria RS Series has more strat sound then the peavey but a little less then my strat. I would really like a different strat sound but not exact like my current strat. Or should I just buy another set of pickups.

Sure, of course you are rewrap the pickups. You can remove some of the windings from the current pickups. You cannot add to the windings; you would have to do a rewrap. If you have the gear and the skill to rewind a pickup, you can do that. However, I suspect if you have the gear and the skill to do a rewind, you would not be asking this question. Rewrapping a pickup is not exactly rocket science, but it is not very easy to do. You do have to know what you are doing.

I have a few Peavey Strat clones and I like the pickups on them. As I recall the older Peaveys used Alinco magnets in their pickups. The Squier uses ceramic magnets. If your Strat is a Fender Standard Strastocater (MIM) it also has ceramic magnets in the pickups. If your Strat is a Fender American Strat it will have Alinco magnets. The ceramic magnets do sound different than the Alinco magnets. I am guessing you prefer the sound of the ceramic magnets. So I would suggest you buy a set of Fender MIM pickups off eBay. You can get a set for $30. That is cheaper than buying the gear to rewind your pickups.
