Mandolin question (performance arts question)?
Ok, I got two items from ebay: an expensive A-Style mandolin and a cheap travel guitar. Both have bridges right below the sound hole that hold the strings. My question is, why are they movable?? If they move around all the time, how is my instrument supposed to stay in tune? Please tell me if I should glue them onto my instrument or do something else. Is this true for all mandolins? Please help I'm really confused.
p.s.: A mandolin bridge looks like this (notice it is different from a guitar's bridge. For guitars, the bridge is where the strings are connected to; for mandolins, the bridge "supports" the strings that go above):

The mandolin bridge is movable in order to adjust the intonation. When the strings are tight it will be held in place. To check if it's in the right place you need an electronic tuner. Tune an open note - then check a note on the same string higher up the neck (12th fret will be same note) - it should also be in tune. If not, moving the bridge towards the neck makes it sharper, moving it down makes it flatter. Do this to the outside strings (G and E) You'll have to keep re-tuning the open strings and re-checking. Once it's set you can put a small mark on the body so you know where it's supposed to be. When you change strings don't take all of the old ones off - do one at a time and the bridge won't move.
